BLURB

I owe a lot of gratitude to my friend Lisa Kristiina from Norway. Once residents at the same bar, she helped me develop an interest and passion for mixing.

Smooth and tight mixing is fundamental to me and what I strive for, entertaining the mind and feet in the same instance.

BIOG

Self-confessed music freak, Jack! Who? (Iain James Kirk) has been dedicated to following music from a very young age with the art form being somewhat a part of the family blood. His Grandfather was a teacher of music and created a series of compositions whilst working at his Grammar School in Sunderland in the late 50’s. Lone Wolf, Iain’s brother, is known around the world for his unique style of dubstep production and superior scratching skills through his co-owned record label NozL Recordings.

Early influences came from electronic wizards The Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin to Daft Punk. In recent years inspiration to start DJing has come from Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Stephan Bodzin, Oliver Huntemann, Maetrik, DJ Hell, Heron and many more. His heart is now set around Minimal and Techno ranging from Deep, Dark, Edgy, Funky, Euphoric and Progressive.

A typical set from Jack! Who? contains hypnotic beginnings, rhythmic middles and powerful endings, trying to create a musical experience for the listener that captivates their mind and feet in the same instance.

Staying busy and trying to develop the electronic music scene in the North East has always been a priority; proven by playing over 200 sets, having many residencies, climaxing with promoting his own club nights.

2007 saw the creation of Iain’s first club night, By Royal Appointment aka B.R.A. the main focus was on techno, electro and minimal, showcasing a wide variety of DJ styles, constantly keeping it fresh and interesting, but also providing a platform for many local artists. It gained recognition in DJMag, Mixmag and local newspapers for the cutting edge talent that was booked.

The escalating reputation of B.R.A. events lead to an unmissable opportunity to play at LUBE: in nearby Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in June 2008. The B.R.A. boys were given the faith of hosting Room 2 and the honour of joining the bill with three internationally known artist/producers Thomas Schumacher (Spielzeug/Get Physical) Luca Bacchetti (Sci+Tec/Ovum) Perc (Perc Trax/CLR).

After two and a half years of regular events, B.R.A. sadly came to an end, but the turn of the decade brought with it an idea that had been manifesting… to release mixes of local artists as well as scouting worldwide talent. The podcast mix series Death Techno was born the beginning of March 2010. The ethos from the outset was to create a unique brand that covered deep, dark, twisted minimal to techno and more, bringing like-minded individuals together through the music, promoting new DJing talent and producers alike.

B.R.A.’s solid history saw Death Techno quickly gather a worldwide following...

Accruing well over 150,000 downloads in total.

The official site deathtechno.com has reached a 18,000 views milestone since being online from November 2010.

In August 2010, the success continued as Iain was asked to host Room 2 once again, this time The Gallery at super club Es Paradis in Ibiza. The main room was headlined by Drum & Bass titans Dillinja (Valve) & Logistics (Hospital) with the pioneering event put together by good friends Calcutta & Grenade based in Newcastle.

Looking for local room hosting chances, September 2011 brought with it a chance to play Native in Newcastle at The Globe. The main room headliner was Jon O’Bir, a trance legend. Enlisted to join the fun were a few of Iain’s respected DJ friends and label owners.

At the beginning of a new year, January 2012 presented a fantastic opportunity for a unique partnership. Death Techno were asked by internet radio station soe.fm to broadcast their mixes on its airwaves first, updating the format into a regular bi-weekly show. Based in Berlin, the epicentre of electronic music, they are a passionate family that love what they do, where high quality and standards are essential. They’ve featured sets by majorly influential electronic artists from around the world.

Celebrating their 2nd birthday in March 2012, Iain decided to throw a party, having free entry with donations going to a local charity. The Bunker is an organisation at the centre of music and arts in Sunderland, constantly using music as a tool to help educate and improve many lives whilst supporting the community. They also provide rehearsal facilities and professional recordings studios paving the way for national and internationally acclaimed bands like Field Music, The Futureheads, Frankie & The Heartstrings with Hyde & Beast more recently.

July 2012 brought a return to Native, again in Newcastle, this time to play with the legendary Alex M.O.R.P.H for his “Prime Mover” Album World Tour. He has worked with artists like Faithless, Paul van Dyk and Armin van Buuren.

Since March 2012, a new project has been lurking in the air when a close friend asked Iain about starting a label with him. Will Reed currently heads up 22 Digit Records and brought the idea forward after seeing first hand the popularity of Death Techno and enjoying the sound he brought to the table. Due to launch in September will be DEAD CERT. Records.

"We enjoy a deep/dark sound that excites and instills passion in the listener like none other. “Quality over quantity” is our mantra, releasing a variety of minimal and techno styles whilst discovering and nurturing new artists. Keeping an open mind we look for everything from style and originality to how a track would sound in a club for that extra dimension through years of experience.

From the creator of Death Techno and Owner of 22 Digit Records."
