Jonny Flanigan, also known as Jumpin first got introduced to mixing on turntables in 1997. With attempting to mix UK Garage and Jungle at afriend’s house and after many occasions of being shown how to mix and failed attempts Jonny soon started to find himself improving extremely fast and chose a path of mixing 4x4 UK Garage.
After many late nights mixing round a friends house and having to ride home on his bike Jonny was desperate to have his own pair of turntables. He was able to save up from his Saturday job (sweeping in barbers) and from a little help from his family he was able to buy his first pair of turntable decks Soundlab DLP 3's.
Jonny spent many late nights practising mixing and purchasing UK Garage vinyl from HMV, and various records shops such as Uptown and Blackmarket records! Jonny’s garage inspiration came from Dj's and artists such as ‘Tuff Jam, Dreem Teem, Mj Cole, EZ, Todd Edwards’ & many other whilst listening to radio shows such as Kiss Fm’s Tuff Jam show every Sunday morning.
At this point Jonny was amongst a group of school friends, as well as another group of friends outside of school that were into the movement of UK Garage whilst hearing the tape packs from the the likes of Garage Nation and La Cosa Nostra. As Jonny had passion for all types of genre music especially on the soulful side he soon started to reveal an interest in more 4x4 bumpy Soulful Vocal Garage, whilst a lot of other DJ’s were playing a more 2 step bass-line style.
Through time Jonny and friends formed a group called ‘Fatal Connection’ which was a mixture of Dj’s & Mc’s playing at random house/hall parties and any other opportunity that was given. Through his journey Fatal Connection had formed with another group called Super Heavy Squad, which they collaborated and made many great mix garage tapes, Jonny would DJ alongside two friends taking turns on the decks while three others would Mc!
After many unforgettable fun nights we had great musical moments but all went our separate ways which was around the year 2001/2002. He noticed UK Garage was leading towards a more bassline/grimey style with people into Mc-ing for the wrong reason, it was then Jonny took an interest in funky house and entered the Funky House scene which his older sister had introduced to him, as she was attending London clubs such as Turnmills, Hangover Grand and The Cross.
Whilst still mixing Garage & funky house in 2002 Jonny then discovered icon House Djs/artists such as Bobby & Steve, Joey Negro, Miguel Migs, Masters at Work and soon discovered other legends Kerri Chandler, Quentin Harris alongside many more!
Jonny had always been amongst music from all angles with listening to general music, Pure swing, Motown, Soul, R n b, Hip Hop, Trance,Hardcore, attending drum bass/house clubs and was listening to music with the general love and passion for good music.
In 2002 Jonny entered a Djing competition in Drakes (Basingstoke) which he'd won and became resident Dj every Saturday night, playing funky house for about 6 months.
He then went to Kavos for 3 months with a friend for a long holiday to have loads of fun and to DJ 3 nights per week.
When Jonny came home from Kavos he was still in a travelling state of mind and in the beginning of 2003 he decided to live with his Dad in Blackpool which turned out to be a 2 year stay. During this time he Dj’ed in various bars which held particular house nights.
Jonny came back home to Basingstoke in 2006 and as a result of being away from the scene he had found he had lost his passion for playingmusic, as he needed to find himself and get back on his feet with building on his sales career.
In 2010 Jonny was given an opportunity to DJ at various local events playing Old Skool Garage, Jonny was once again inspired and motivated to get back into the music scene to continue his journey and not waste his talent.
During this time Jonny knew he had to purchase a pair of CD decks as House music was mainly only available on mp3's rather than vinyls which he then saved and eventually in the beginning 2012 Jonny purchased a brand new pair of Pioneer Cdj 850's
Jonny felt lost with so much house music available and did not know where to begin but from randomly listening to a track from artist Dale Howard and purchasing most of his tracks, Jonny slowly started to find the right path and in the last year he has played in Bars in Basingstoke such as Censo’s, Pure, Zeus and has had guest appearances on an underground radio station ‘Release FM’ and will now continue his journey.
Jonny plays music from the heart and that he enjoys for himself, rather than just for other people. It just so happens his style is loved by many others.
His style of mixing is known as being a fast power mixer, which quickly makes an impact on any given moment whilst holding his mix together!
As Jonny is into music for the love of music, he is able to mix all types of house such as deep, soulful, vocal, tech and any style that he loves and will suit his style of play.
