The first thing to you should know about Itsu is that he doesn't much care for genres. Labels like psychedelic, IDM, glitch, drum & bass, dubstep and ambient, are relevant, but then again, not quite adequate. Itsu's lush, underwater soundscapes and ethereal melodies sooth the listener into a false sense of security before exploding into a barrage of distorted granular synthesis, rumbling sub bass and frenetic break beats. There is something strangely familiar about these tracks, but at the same time, they're not quite like anything you've heard before.
After working as a guitarist in Sydney's progressive and alternative rock scene for nearly a decade, and producing records for several up and coming bands, I became disillusioned with bands and bored by rock music. The vast realms of experimental electronic music became more and more enticing, so I refocused all of my attention on my much neglected electronic side project. Itsu is the result.
In August 2012, I released my debut EP Sublimate independently through Bandcamp and Ektoplazm, and have moved over 5000 copies to date. On it's release, Ektoplazm Owner and Administrator Basilisk had this to say about Sublimate:
"Here's an extremely awesome release from Itsu, one of the new breed of ultra-creative Australian musicians mashing genres together and producing gold. If you're loving Mr. Bill, Hypnagog, Electrocado, Circuit Bent, S.E.T.H, etc., check this future gem out."
The lead track from Sublimate, "Drizzle", was later re-released by Enig'matik Records on their Evolving Freedom web release. My remix of Phsiris' track "Digital Dream" was also released by Enig'matik, as part of their Singles Series.
Throughout 2012, I was lucky enough to perform alongside artists such as Birds Of Paradise, Hedflux, Grouch, Electrypnose, Terrafractyl/Hypnagog, Morphonix, Tom Cosm, Spoonbill, Dub FX, Sub Atari Knives, Dysphemic, Mr. Bill, Electrocado, Tha Fruitbat, Mr. Rogers, Meat Axe, Circuit Bent, Dov, Cursor Miner, Goosebumpz, Gruff, Hypnotech and Pspiralife at festivals including Regrowth, Peats Ridge (2011 and 2012), Deliverance, Mayan Prophesy Summer Solstice and Sounds Psylly.
