    Victor Krutul, director of marketing for silicon photonics operations for Intel, stops by to talk about 10 years’ worth of work in optical communications. Silicon photonics (rather than copper) allows for improved system-to-system interconnects in the data center at speeds of 100 Gbps or more, and, because they’re made with silicon, a module will cost less and have greater reliability. Intel recently announced the development phase for the program, which could lead to a disaggregated data center (a rack of CPUs, a rack of disk drives, etc.) and an easier upgrade path.
