In this episode of Arts Tonight, presenter Vincent Woods travels to Chicago to meet architects Raymund Ryan, Sheila O'Donnell, Yvonne Farrell and Tom de Paor as they take part in Irish Architecture Now. They discuss the Chicago skyline, the possibilities for exchange and dialogue between Irish and American architects, and their response to some of the signature buildings they have visited, including Mies Van der Rohe's Farnsworth House. Vincent also takes a look at the IBAM Literary Festival and discusses the impact of Imagine Ireland with Minister for Arts Jimmy Deenihan and CEO of Culture Ireland Eugene Downes.
Irish Architecture Now is part of Imagine Ireland, Culture Ireland’s year of Irish arts in America in 2011, and is curated by Raymund Ryan, produced by the Irish Architecture Foundation and funded by Culture Ireland and Enterprise Ireland. IAN saw two groups of Irish architects travel to six prestigious U.S venues this Autumn, where they participated in symposia, presenting key aspects of their work and engaging in discussion on critical issues facing Irish Architecture Now.
