The Spiritchaser collective of Mark Bamford, Richard Earnshaw, co-producer Daniel Jones (Est8) and vocalist Emily Cook have become bona-fide superstars in South Africa since their absolute smash hit “These Tears” was first championed by DJ Fresh and Euphonik on 5FM and subsequently featured on Vinny Da Vinci’s ‘Deep House Sounds 8’ and Now That’s What I Call Music 58 in 2011.
Since then they’ve toured the country and raised the roof at the Moses Mabhida Stadium at the Vodacom Unlimited event at the end of last year, where they had the entire crowd singing along to this anthem. But with the release of the double-CD ‘Tears In The Rain’ the outfit demonstrates their consistency, quality and diversity.
The follow-up to “These Tears” - which dominated just about every chart it was possible to in South Africa for large swathes of 2011 – “Yesterday’s Gone” further demonstrates they are a class act and their single “Conch” also hit the top spot on a number of underground shops, radio playlists and charts. This album continues to impress, melding Spiritchaser’s gorgeously hypnotic melodies, Emily’s sensual voice and a bottom-end that really means it to consistently devastating effect.
This should come as no surprise considering the group’s pedigree: Collectively they have a deep and rich history in dance music, DJing and performing all over the world. In the studio their collaborations, productions and remixes include Blu Cantrell, Groove Armada, Dido, Roy Ayres, Jocelyn Brown, Angie Brown, Bob Sinclar, Black Coffee, Stacey Jackson and a secret production with Snoop Dogg to name a few. For over a decade Spiritchaser have been releasing on their home label Guess Records including their debut album ‘1440’ (from which “These Tears” was originally taken) and now the House Afrika stable in SA.
‘Tears In The Rain’ contains a funkily atmospheric selection of a dozen cuts on disc one (including the omnipresent “Est8 Piano Mix” of “These Tears”), and as a bonus there’s a second disc, segued by House Afrika’s Tim White, that includes the original of “These Tears”, and alternate mixes of many of the tracks on the first disc.
It’s an absorbing collection that looks set to cement the reputation of the colossal musical juggernaut that is Spiritchaser.
