In an attempt to graft the sprawling improvisation of pioneers like The Necks onto the tightly planned economy of pop and electronica, Hence Therefore uses synths, samplers, effects, a mic and a loop pedal to spontaneously generate new tracks at every performance, ranging unpredictably from sparkling vocal-driven pop music to dark, messy techno and everything in between. Audience and performer alike revel in discovering the songs simultaneously.

Each improvised performance is recorded live to a single cassette tape. The tape is sold after the show for $5 – an imperfect, one-of-a-kind artefact of music performed once and never performed again.

Offstage, Hence Therefore also creates non-improvised pop/electronica records, as well as sound design for theatre, radio and film.

hence therefore Simon Unwin, Sydney, Australia
