About
He·mip·ter·a [hi-mip-ter-uh] : Probing Aural Spaces
Hemiptera was formed in late 2008 as a mobile studio and performance project by Yanni and Jenn Ehm (Montreal/San Francisco) that migrates throughout North America. While rooted in the contemporary techno movement and influenced by aesthetic principals of minimalism, the duo eschews genre dogma and embodies a spirit of curiousity in all sonic creations.
Hemiptera is inspired by the otherwordly percussion of "true" bugs, including the cicada, whose music carries a multidimensional quality. Rather than capturing the sounds of these mysterious music makers through field recordings, the sounds of the natural and ephemeral worlds are emulated and elaborated upon purely in the studio.
Described by the Chapel Hill Independent as "An excellent late-night escape", Hemiptera performs a Live PA in a largely improvisational format using two JazzMutant Lemurs. This free-form approach allows for intention to be more directly transmitted through sound and "moments" of co-creation to be experienced between the artists, audience and the 'spirit' of sound.
Hemiptera's Liveshow has been featured at dozens of electronic music events in the U.S. and Canada. Festival performances including Ithaca, N.Y.’s Light in Winter, Raleigh N.C.’s Mosaic Fall Music Festival, Chapel Hill’s SignalFest and ATLPSY's Sacred Seeds.
Releases can be found on Pertin-nce (CA), Vague Terrain (CA), Insectorama (DE) and Bleepsequence (US).
