About

The Helber Sisters, Vicki and Janet, were a duo through the 1970 and 1980s, in Bloomington,Indiana. We grew up singing together as children. Janet started playing the guitar at the age of 13, after hearing Bob Dylan on the radio.. Janet and Vicki sang in bands, did back up vocals for local musician's recordings, and sang together at local Folk Festivals. After we started raising our families, and Janet's guitar broke and was given the last rights, we did not sing together for countless years.
In the profile picture, Vicki is at the mic and Janet is the one peeping in from the left .
Three years ago Janet found a vintage 1935 Gibson Kalamazoo guitar, and bought it. Inspired by this wonderful instrument, Janet started practicing, Alice (Vicki's daughter) joined, with her beautiful, strong voice, and we are now a trio! Our friend, Steve Hinnefeld joined us with his guitar, helping Janet by picking out the tunes on the instrumentals. Steve had also put down his guitar for 20 years, while raising his family, so he has done some practicing too.His wife is glad that we have gotten him out of the house, and playing guitar again. The three sisters take turns at the various vocals. We can all sing the range, but Vicki shines at the lower parts. She is the backbone of the trio, with her strong steady voice.
Janet, being the guitar player is also the song researcher, and is learning the songs faster than we can polish and record them., We are quite happy when we play together. It is a joy!

@Guitar Picker: Well, thanks for asking! We have a bass player now and are really happy with how having that bottom beat helps keep us on track! We are having a blast with our music. The recording made last summer is still being edited, slowly, since my son Patrick is working two jobs and has little time. We may have to go to another studio! Seriously, it is getting very frustrating!

@Olen Roberts: That is such a sweet song! I love "Sweet Fern", and we do it very well, the three of us, on the yodeling parts. Alice sings "Dreaming of you Darling" and we have recorded her singing "Sailor on the Deep Blue Sea" and "Meet me By the Moonlight". Our recordings have been stuck in limbo lately though, because they are being edited by my son, who is working two jobs, and has little time these days. Oh, we also have really enjoyed singing "Lonesome Pine Special" I have been learning my guitar playing from a collection of Carter Family songs that I have. Also, Norman Blake.
