In São Paulo dance music didn’t start in the
city downtown or in posh areas. It started
in the east side where 3 night clubs called
Toco, Contra Mão and Overnight went
against all odds and mixed house, hip hop,
techno and funk, giving birth to a whole
subculture that even now only few people
can understand.
From that same area and drinking from
these fountains comes 5 boys that absor-bed the influence of those nights clubs
and now they are crystalized as Hatchets,
crossing influences from late 80’s/early 90’s
dance and house music with a band feel.
In 2011, the “City Skylines” EP was rele-ased with acclaim by Brazilian indie press
and the single “My Posh Slum” hitting on
MTV and the music blogging community.
Later on 2012, the single “Too Cold to Be
Mine”, mixed by the young Flood/Alan
Moulder protégée Darren Lawson (engi-neer with Bloc Party/Editors/White Lies)
came along with a classy video that gave a
“Factory’s Joy Division” feeling to the tra-ck, clearly showing the direction towards
electronic music that the group was taking.
WE ARE HATCHETS
Yet in 2012, Hatchets released the album
“EAST SOUNDS”, a compilation of all
tracks recorded in the past year and a
homage to their roots. The heading track
of the album is the single “Chinese New
Year’s Love”, a fresh rendition to house
music mixed with sunny guitar riffs. Once
again mixed by Darren Lawson and the
remixes by artists such as We Are Pirates,
Supermassive Wave, Whang & Scott the
song went straight to the dance floor of
nightclubs in São Paulo.
