After the success of The Lord Of The Rings (http://bit.ly/ZCLPzE) Tolkien wanted to re-write The Hobbit in a similar style but he never had the chance.

Tolkien both wrote and illustrated the first edition of The Hobbit, he also wrote and illustrated letters from Father Christmas for his children every year http://bit.ly/TATACS
