Now that we have the backing track, we need people to lay down some vocals.

Record yourself singing along with the backing track, but wear headphones so you only record your voice. Upload that file to the Soundcloud. Sing the whole song (up to the point where we have lyrics, no need to make it go on and on), and I'll edit together the parts I think are best suited to each person. If you have requests for certain lines you want to sing, I'll try to make sure you sing them unless someone else wants them too.
Don't worry about your voice and/or mic sounding bad. The goal is to get as many people to join as possible. I can do some production work to make the sound quality a little better if you have a shitty mic.
Main goals to keep in mind while you're recording: have your voice be at a level where it's not so loud that the audio file "clips" or becomes distorted, but loud enough so that you're clearly distinguishable from ambient noise in the background. And wear headphones while you're listening to the backing track, so that minimal bleeding (ideally none) of the backing track gets recorded. If you keep these goals in mind the mic quality thing won't be too much of an issue.
And in regard to if you think you have a "bad" voice -- all the better. I think it will be great for non-musician fans to be mixed in with the songsmith all-stars, because it will show the solidarity of the wide spectrum of BTLs involved in this effort.
