Imagination & Missy Elliot ‘Working The Illusion’ (greg wilson mash-up)
Only previously shared for a limited period via SoundCloud.
When I was putting together the Resident Advisor mix, which I mentioned in the text accompanying The Ting Tings ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’ edit I uploaded last week, I decided to create an alternative version of my ‘Gotta Keep Workin’ It’ mash-up, which was recently shared here: Imagination & Missy Elliot 'Gotta Keep Workin' It' (greg wilson mash-up) by gregwilson
The idea this time was to include the Imagination vocal, and initially hide the intention by making it appear that I was simply playing ‘Just An Illusion’ before, after about three and a half minutes, the vocal switched to Missy Elliot. People by now were well used to hearing me play ‘Gotta Keep Workin’ It’, which had been a signature track for me throughout the past couple of years, so I liked the idea of putting a twist on things.
To give it a further difference I only used part of the vocal I’d utilized for ‘Gotta Keep Workin’ It’, adding a new section. At the end it reverts back to the ‘Just An Illusion’ chorus with Missy weaving around it.
I originally called it ‘Re-Working The Illusion’ in the tracklisting for the Resident Advisor mix, which went online in September 2009 (http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=119), but lost the ‘Re-’ somewhere along the way.
Imagination once came to my Tuesday night Jazz-Funk session at Wigan Pier to promote ‘Body Talk’, which would become their first hit in 1981. This personal appearance was arranged by Morgan Khan, then head of promotions at R&B Records, who’d go on to mastermind the hugely influential Street Sounds compilations, including the essential ‘Electro’ series, which made such a massive impact following its launch in October ’83.
