    BEFORE I BREAK
    I've been this way before
    When I thought I understood.
When all those words that failed me then
    Are faling me right now.
I'd write down everyone of them
    I'd hang on every word.
You've never learned to live, boy
    You've only learned to die.
If I could stop the hands of time
Fold mine and bow my head
I'd ask how many times could I bend
    Before I break?
    When I believed in nothin'
Did I just believe in "me"?
When there's nothin that I'm givin'
    I don't already own.
    And all I've really got,
Is the place I'm standing on.
And they're tryin' to tell me now
"You've gotta pick a side to be on"
Well I'm asking them a question
And so far no one has replied:
Tell me how many times will I bend
    Before I break?
    All of this will fade,
    All of this is vain
When I was young I read the words
    That "nothing gold can stay".
The world is full of empty things
    They promise that they're not.
And people try and sell ya more
    Things you've already got.
    Well everything you've gotta have
    I promise that ya don't.
How many times should you bend
    Before you break?
I've never been this old before
And I've never been this young
And I've never held onto a thought
Like I have held a gun.
    I've never seen a country
    Other than my own.
And I've never heard the old bird sing
    The fourth day of July
So i figure all I'm saying,
    Has been better said before.
And that's how many times can we bend
    Before we break.
