Since the beginning of the 19th century, Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonic works have been part of the core repertoire of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the first orchestra to play Beethoven's First Symphony one year after its premiere - even before the first edition was published. The Gewandhaus Orchestra performed the first complete cycle of Beethoven's symphonies worldwide during the composer's lifetime, in the 1825/26 concert season. Since then, every Gewandhaus Kapellmeister has conducted "his" Beethoven cycle at the Gewandhaus. In this tradition, Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchestra present their interpretation of the nine symphonies.
The complete cycle of Beethoven’s nine Symphonies is a landmark event for Decca Classics, for Riccardo Chailly, and for the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Based on a series of critically-acclaimed Leipzig concerts, the nine symphonies, recorded in the unique acoustic of the Gewandhaus itself, are accompanied by no less than eight of the composer’s overtures, all presented on five CDs in a prestigious limited-edition package.
