Need a gift for a gifted musician?
I've been making electronic music on/off the last 10 years or so, but have only really started getting into it in the last year or two (2010+).
As you can probably tell from my tracks and their titles, I'm a big fan of old school computers, and previously owned a Spectrum and an Amiga. I sort of tried music composition and production on them both, but very naively!
My first forays were made using less serious software like eJay and Music 2000 (on the PS2!). I tried Cubase, but couldn't get the hang of it, and it nearly put me off production altogether! I play guitar and bought the Novation Nio audio interface in order to record my strummings on my laptop. There was a free DAW with it called Ableton Live Lite. This blew my mind at how easy it was to construct a track and manipulate sounds. I bought Live Intro, and have now upgraded to Live 8 (as of 2012).
Other equipment I use:
* MacBook Pro
* AKG Musik Hall headphones
* M-Audio Oxygen 25 USB MIDI controller
I also use a variety of sample packs from Computer Music magazine (which is great, by the way) from labels such as Loopmasters and Time + Space.
I hope you enjoy my experimentations, and I would welcome any comments/critiques. I am still getting used to mixing, and any advice would be welcome!
