Me... grew up in the UK. Born in Bath, studied in Leeds, worked in London and partied hard pretty much everywhere! Now live in Western Australia (Perth) with my wife and two beautiful kids.
I fell into the house/rave scene during the early 90s while at Leeds Uni - The Gallery, Back to Basics were my weekend homes... I was always obsessed with what went on in the DJ booth and finally got to try out mixing on a mates crappy cheap decks. I was instantly addicted and luckily he loaned me his set up soon after. Even though I was self taught and pretty terrible technically I really enjoyed honing my skills. But in time he moved on and took his decks with him. I couldn't afford my own and found myself drifting away from Djing and onto other things.
Fast forward ten years and I was introduced to Abelton Live by a mate. I grabbed the Intro version and started messing around on it creating some programmed “mixes” for friends. This led me to think about getting back into Djing. I soon discovered the emerging world of DJ controllers. It didn't take me long to get myself one. While its viewed as a poor relation to ‘real’ vinyl Djing (and I guess it probably is from a purists standpoint) I found it an affordable way to re-enter the scene and that suited me perfectly.
The “mixtapes” I've put up here are all recreated in Abelton. I play and record them live first but find that Abelton allows me to refine them, which in turn makes them more enjoyable to listen to (I hope). The odd crunchy transition or hot blend ruins the re-playability for me personally. My live mixing isn’t quite as accomplished but I'm always working on improving it and no one seems to have had any complaints at the parties I've played.
Huge respect to all the producers and DJs doing their thing in the funk, hip-hop and breakbeat genres. I'll listen to pretty much anything funky and SoundCloud has been great in introducing me to a much wider range of labels, artists and music than I had been party to before. The sharing of dope tunes is greatly appreciated by me; Funkybro.
