  • jochempaap

Hej, Soundclouders... I just launched a public collaboration project:

    www.speedyj.com/opencollabs

Everyone is invited to send me parts which i will use to produce a new album. The entire process can be followed online via my site. The resulting album will be released on my label Electric Deluxe, and profits will be shared 50/50 with artists appearing on it.

Sign up between Nov 1st and Dec 1st and send your audio via the dropbox on my site. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Check www.speedyj.com for FAQ's and more details. Let me know what you think about the idea..!

    cheers!

    Jochem.

nice..... i am in :) will drop something in the box for sure...

This is a great idea, I'm most definetly signing up. It's these kind of projects that can really change the way music is made because of modern technology.

im kinda intrigued about this idea.
so essentially your going to compile a huge sample pack(something like apple loops for example)with the loops an other things being contributed by members from here and pick out components that work together and make songs out of them.you could take it further and let everyone have access to the samples that are uploaded and let them mix them together and then you filter out the best ones to release as an album.
one part of me thinks this is a great idea, another part of me thinks this is just lazy of you to expect people to create melodys and basslines in order for you to do the easy part, the arranging.
but internal conflict is good and ill keep an eye on your site for sure now :) :)

Sounds like a really cool way to make an album! Glad soundcloud can help out!

  • jochempaap

cool, looking forward to your contributions! it's not an attempt to get quick access to free stuff. i do hope i get material that is inspiring, and takes the album in directions i didn't think of myself. yeah, we're working on several ideas about what to do with the resulting album in addition to releasing it in a traditional way. here's a comment that was used in a recent interview; sums up the motivation behind the project:

"Collaboration is the way forward. We have to rethink how we deal with intellectual property. Creative Commons is a good start. The way we all discover, consume, share, recommend music / art has changed dramatically over the last few years, invented and driven by ourselves. We have already decided how we want things to work, so it’s about time institutions / legal frameworks are adjusted to catch up. The current attitude of the indusrty (DRM, calling people pirates, etc) only causes polarization between consumers and the industry, and causes a whole generation to grow up in a climate with disregard for intellectual property. This project is an attempt to set an example on how the changed infrastructure and culture can be seen as an environment for creation, inspiration, collaboration, fun, fair treatment of all collaborators and their material, and hopefully a cool end result".

idea: release the album with the raw loops and samples used to create it.
this way other can then remix the album and send it back your way.
    awesome.

also: are there any genre restrictions?
if not, i might join up.

Ive just uploaded the highlights from a night with my Southern Baptist church choir. Drop it into a Space Echo and put a 4.4 kick behind it .. that shit will be DOP:E

Nine inch nails has done something not exactly like this but similar. Their last album had a version that came with broken down parts for every track so you could remix literally every track on the album. I think that is an absolutely fantastic idea that I'd love to see other artists do. In fact I bought the album solely for this reason. To bad that actual music sucked. :( Trent is not what he used to be, but I'm still inspired by the approach.

Really cool idea that would be impossible or at least impractical without a service like SoundCloud.

FYI - I put up a post on Open Collabs at Synthtopia:
    http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2008/11/07/take-part-in-a-global-electronic-music-collaboration/

I'm looking forward to hearing more about your project.

seannash said 'another part of me thinks this is just lazy of you to expect people to create melodys and basslines in order for you to do the easy part, the arranging.'
its the opposite for me- i can make sounds and loops but have real difficulty arranging them into a coherrent tune- id be happy if someone else did something useful with my sounds

  • seannash

    @drskime
just copy the arrangement of another song, whenever they bring in there bassline you bring in your bassline.whenever they bring in there leadline, introduce a break you introduce a break.do this until you can come up with your own arrangement.
i wasnt slating this process, its an adventureous scheme but i dont think i could call a track mine or have the artist name solely mine if i used samples provided by other people.
its a bit like grabbing a vengeance sample packs and piecing together a track from the loops provided.
but like i said i see the other side of the story on this and agree its a unique project

    Collabo, word I'm down!

    About me:
...long time beatmaker from Philadelphia PA. Right now mainstream music in the US sucks, which is why I spend most of my time behind my trusty MPC2000 trying to fight the powers that be, with beats. I'm really digging this sound cloud site. I'm a big fan of Flying Lotus, DJ Krush, and many instrumental "sound scape" producers that are out there doing their thIng. I love me some instrumentals. That's my specialty. Sure I collab with artists but sometimes words just get in the way. I'm involved with a few projects that you might want to check out. First is my man Jah I Witness, who just released his second solo album "The Struggle, The Love, The Glory" www.myspace.com/truesoundenterprises
Second is the Yoga is Instrumental Project www.myspace.com/yogaisinstrumental and The Remnant Project www.myspace.com/theremnantproject
Hit me up. I'm open to doing collabs, expecially if your're putting out a project, mixtape, album, or film
    peace,
    st. paul

Cool you're collabing again! (should be done way more often and by many more)

I think I'll join up for this project (as soon as I find the time to create new sounds, loops, breaks, cuts, etc.. for it).
Is the audio dropping also till December 1st? Or is that just the sign up period?

    Cheers!

    DCK
