"Desire Lines" is another track from Darren Hayman's eagerly anticipated double album "The Violence". A three year work in progress, the record chronicles the Essex Witch Trials of the 17th Century against a backdrop of the English Civil War. An outstanding creative achievement, it's a truly unique and unprecedented album.
Desire Lines are the muddy paths worn into fields and grass by the demands of many people’s routes. It's possible to imagine many people wanting to leave England like a sinking ship during the Civil War, and Queen Henrietta Maria herself escaped in a boat to The Netherlands. Hayman imagines one of the accused witches and her protector wishing for the same; a small boat that would wash upon friendly shores as England slowly destroyed itself.
The song itself was recorded over the course of a day in a synagogue in Canterbury.
