@CaptD: To quote the article found at Liz's dcbureau link: "In the early 1950s, the United States aggressively urged Tokyo to get involved in the nuclear power business." Japan was enabled (many here in Japan would say "forced") by the US to become a nuclear power. As the nation that introduced this tremendous power, the US is loathe to honestly tackle this problem, no matter what country from which problems issue. That said, that's the least of our worries, right? Let's find a way to effectively engage world leaders to end reliance on such dangerous energy sources and solve Japan's immediate problems.

I just want to say thanks to the producers of Dr. Kaku's audio show for giving us this excellent information. I'd also like to thank Dr. Kaku for having the courage to continue to speak up about Fukushima. It is criminal that not only the mainstream media but also the US and Canadian governments are not monitoring this situation. Not only aren't they monitoring it, they're not helping Japan with this situation which is obviously completely out of their depth. In fact, we're all out of our depth as this catastrophe will require techniques and equipment to be invented in order to deal with it. Let's hope this happens before that spent fuel pond either drains or topples. God help us if this happens. This doesn't even deal with the three meltdowns because how do you pick up fuel that has liquified?????
I have to agree with CaptD's comment that if this was North Korea there'd be hell to pay! There's another excellent article I am in the process of reading that gives a good history of how Japan came to be in this position.
