Variously categorized as “Death-gaze,” “Death-trance,” and a weird combination of the better known “Crunk” and “Shoegaze” genres, UNISON members Julien Camarena and Melanie Moran are actually recognized in their home base of France as leaders of what is now known as the “Witch House” movement.

UNISON has also been referred to as a French version of the Midwestern band Salem, about which Moran comments, “If it is the case, this is very flattering because we adore this band. Like them, our identity is situated somewhere between the countryside and the city and that brings out a special way of perceiving things.”

It is this special perception that is drawing fans to UNISON’s music in the US, even without having a proper album release or promotion here. UNISON released its first EP “Outside” in 2009 on the Matte Black label.

The resulting attention earned the duo shows with like-minded artists such as A Place To Bury Strangers, Battles, Young Prisms, and Suuns as well as press in Europe from
Les Inrockuptibles, Elegy, Standard, Noise, Start Up, Modzik and dozens of blogs.

The French label Lentonia, which has previously issued UNISON records in Europe, has now marked April 10th, 2012 as the release date of the debut album by UNISON in America. The self-titled record is full of uncompromising, dark, layered sounds that are as equally capable of melting hearts with Moran’s siren-like voice as they are at putting listeners into a waking dream-like trance.

UNISON walks a thin line between exhausting and energizing, but is always passionate. “We have to make music,” says Moran. “It’s a vital need. We need to create and to find a way to share our feelings, even if no one cares. We want our music to be sensual, dark, noisy, melodic, and plain loud. Very loud.”

The debut self-titled album by France’s UNISON will be released by Lentonia Records in the US on April 10th, 2012 preceded by the lead single and video “Brothers & Sisters”.
