St. Louis-based band Picture Day emerged from the demise of the local group Team Tomato, a band of young, single men in love with The Who, Guided By Voices, and middle-era Bowie. Attempting to live up to the myths of their heroes, both onstage and off, it was only a matter of time before Team Tomato ran its course.
Brian Weigert, Picture Day’s lead singer, occasional guitarist and principal songwriter, spent his first few post-Tomato Team years in the country music world, recording a well-received album with the Red Headed Strangers and an album of classic country duets in the spirit of Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Weigert’s band mates, guitarist Jordan Ross and drummer Luis Actis, practiced not being rock stars by building houses, finding wives and having babies.
“I enjoyed what I was doing, but it wasn’t my first love,” says Weigert in an obvious nod to the unending allure of music making. After turning Actis’s basement into its new practice space, and with the addition of fellow St. Louis local Steve Sesti on bass, soon every day became Picture Day. The band’s initial release, the “Crowded Wheel” EP, was enough of a success locally to encourage the boys to book one of the city’s best rooms, Sawhorse Studios, to record the follow-up.
The catchy, to-the-point tunes on the “Every Day Is Picture Day” EP, to be released nationally on April 16th, show the band’s growth, chops, and underlying sense of humor. It’s this quality that landed Picture Day a gig (their first!) as support to self-described ragtime entertainer, innovator and preservationist, Pokey LaFarge, a St. Louis sensation who appears on Jack White’s recent "Blunderbuss" album. Picture Day also participates in Ween tribute nights, and band members Weigert and Ross have three full length hip-hop albums to their name under the moniker MLD. Yes, these guys are fun.
“It occurred to me some years ago, that music is the one thing that no one is forcing me to do,” says Weigert. “In that sense, I feel like what we make is folk music. I punch a clock, and when I’m done, I drag my ass to band practice because I want to hear some loud guitars. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wanting that.” Picture Day’s latest EP “Every Day Is Picture Day” is scheduled for national release on April 16th, 2013 to be preceded by the single “Madoline,” streaming now.
Madoline, you hold me in your eyes until I’m divine
In Madison, you run around all night just having your fun
Have a light, you told me, but I just can’t do this all night
Let’s get away from the endless aimless human display
Ch: You can run to the part of the stage you call your home
While I rage at the horrid mistakes that were all my own
And we’ll find that they cannot believe
That it comes to us so naturally
Anyway they were only a part of our scenery
Another round, is the end in sight or nowhere to be found?
Are we done, you asked me but you just don’t fool anyone
What a scene you’ve got it on your sleeve, you’re so indiscreet
Madoline, I’ll hold you to the things you say all the time
