"This song was written on a plane flying from Seattle to Austin," says Boy + Kite's Darvin Jones. "Seattle at dusk was quite beautiful with the sun setting over the Puget Sound, the low hum of the plane, and the dim lights. I started having this dream of a girl and boy who just couldn’t connect and the boy flying right above her, just out of reach. I think subconciously it's about a relationship I had in the Northwest. I was often very unreachable."

For the "Right Above Me" video, the band wanted to capture some behind the scenes footage while recording the new EP "We Can Go Anywhere We Want," which features "Right Above Me" as well as the recently released single "Fall." "I really like the style and atmosphere of this video," says Jones. "Especially when compared to our video for 'Think In Stereo' (from 2011's "Go Fly" album), which is all glitzy and flashy. The "Right Above Me" video is not your typical gimmicky video, and were not that typical band either."

    Bio:

“Take Sonic Youth’s dynamic shifts and sexy sensibility. Add what could be said to approach a fetish: Electric axes digging hard into blues-based riffs, then throw in some Pixies/Cure love.” – My Old Kentucky Blog

Boy + Kite rustled up a bit of a bang around Austin, Texas upon the release of the band’s debut album "Go Fly" in 2011. Originally formed as a duo – guitarists and co-lead vocalists Beth Puorro and Darvin Jones met in a hot tub (Google “Puorro” “Darvin” “hot tub”) – the foursome, which now also includes Giuseppe Ponti on bass and Marc Henry on drums, has distinguished itself in a short time.

"Go Fly" got lodged in the charts of the city’s NPR affiliate KUT (now KUTX), and Boy + Kite was picked to perform as opener for favorite sons of Fort Worth, The Toadies, at that band’s annual Dia De Los Toadies fest. Boy + Kite was adored there, and went on to open additional Toadies shows around Texas.

Family life soon called, inflicting constant delays on the production of the video for the band’s popular song “Think In Stereo,” but eventually kids get born and so do paint fight filled films. The “Think In Stereo” video, directed and produced by C3 Presents video director Daniel Gibbs of Yard Turkey (Coldplay, Dixie Chicks, Blues Traveler, Ben Kweller) is worth the wait.

“This video was absolutely a riot to make,” says Jones. “Daniel was such a pleasure to work with, and brave enough to get very messy and with very expensive film equipment! We all gave up some clothes, shoes, and almost our eyesight that day.”

The clip is also a reminder of this band’s pop power as it celebrates its upcoming official SXSW showcase with the release of an EP of new songs. Titled “We Can Go Anywhere We Want,” the new Boy + Kite EP (available on March 19th) was recorded by Nada Surf keyboardist Louie Lino and shows off the part of Boy + Kite rooted in Sonic Youth’s sound explorations, all the way down to the inclusion of the original 8–minute version of the EP’s lead track “Right Above Me.”

While Boy + Kite’s sound has been compared to Sonic Youth and The Pixies from the beginning, it’s the dueling musical personalities of Puorro / Jones that also remind of Gordon / Moore and Deal / Francis. A tried and true dynamic, it works once again within Boy + Kite.

“We aren’t trying to tell just one story,” Jones explains. “We combine our writing, then we cut it up and put it back together to make a new story altogether.” Puorro adds, “Our guitar dynamic is similar to our writing style. We create structures that mesh, but we are coming from different places.”

    "Right Above Me"

You're right up above me flying
    And I’m way down below
And I wish I was right beside you
    But sometimes I’m too slow

And put your arms around me tightly
    And hold my place
You’re faster than I think I can be
But I know its not, I hope it’s not a race

Going to cross the road still
These days are always too late
Going to find a way to, try to find a way
Cause all I want to do is go fly
Cause if you knew I think you would try
Cause all I want to do is go fly
Cause if you knew I think you’d try
