Originally an old poem of mine. Decided to find some music for it. The sparsity is deliberate.

    Lullaby for a victim

If you can just hold on son
    The ambulance is coming.
It will soon be here I’m sure.
    There there. There there.

No, keep the bandage on son.
    It encourages the clotting.
You’ll soon be alright I’m sure.
    There there. There there.

I know you’re feeling cold son.
    Your blood pressure is falling.
This coat should keep you warm.
    There there. There there.

Tell me what your name is son,
    And concentrate on breathing.
Don’t you go to sleep now.
    There there. There there.

    Think about your family son.
You don’t want them all grieving.
    You’ll be right as rain.
    There there. There there.

Don’t pull on that knot son.
    That’s your own intestine.
Best leave it where it is.
    There there. There there.

Your lips are getting blue son.
    Try to keep them moving.
I’ll give you breath of mine.
    There there. There there.

Your eyes are cold and glassy son,
Though your heart I keep on pumping.
The ambulance is here at last.
    There there. There there.

We rushed you on the trolley son,
But the doctors’ heads are shaking.
They say I can let go now.
    There there. There there.

Your mother doesn’t know yet, son,
But her heart will soon be breaking
When I have to go and say to her
    There there. There there.
