    DANCING

    Round the kitchen table
    Dancing with my mother.
She would go round one way
    And I around the other

“If you take a wife son
    You must keep her heart.
    Dance around the table
    And you will never part.

    Diamonds, gold and silver,
    They are precious things
But it’s dancing round the table
That makes a true heart sing.”

    Walking with my father
    Down the Chestnut Way.
He showed me the wild bluebells
    Where he and mother lay.

“If you get a lassie son
    And you’d keep her well,
    You must take her dancing
    Among the wild bluebells.

    Diamonds, gold and silver,
    They are precious things
But it’s dancing through the bluebells
That makes a true heart sing.”

The years have flown by now.
    My parents are both dead
But I met a lovely lassie
And she’s the one I wed.

    We had two fine children
But from the nest they’ve flown.
My old wife she’s passed away
    And now I’m all alone.

    Diamonds, gold and silver,
    They are precious things
But it’s dancing with your true love
That makes a true heart sing.

    I still gather bluebells
    In the month of May.
I put them on my windowsill
    To chase the clouds away.

I take down my wife’s photo
And clasp it to my heart.
    I dance around the table
    And we are not apart.
