Emme’s extensive career behind the decks has seen her work her way through every colour of the house music spectrum, from the deepest sounds of the underground to big vocal remixes that fall just on the right side of the fine line that separates fun from fromage. With the confidence gained from an 11 year DJ career on her side, she’s takes an anything goes approach to main room house music; where fat and chunky big room can rub shoulders with deeper sounds; techy flavours can be dropped right alongside something more soulful.
With her skills on the deep and funky warm-up tip well known across Sydney, Emme’s DJing philosophy is also geared towards playing peak-time slots – dropping all the sounds she loves across eclectic yet impeccably programmed sets built on the sort of chunky grooves that first tempted her off the dancefloor and into the DJ booth in the first place. And she always loved dropping a big vocal anthem while she’s heating up the party!
Originally from the UK, Emme’s dance music education didn’t begin until she landed in Sydney in 1999 – right in the middle of the city’s turn-of-the-century clubbing explosion. The trance-filled dancefloors of nights like Sublime were far removed from the village she grew up in, but they slowly awoke a creative side of her that perhaps never would’ve emerged if she hadn’t broken free and moved Down Under. A 2002 birthday present of a Central Station Records gift voucher kicked off a vinyl addiction that was soon well over 1000-strong. Some of her very first tracks purchased were Dina Vass – The Love I Have For You, Afro Medusa – Pasilda, and Alan Braxe & Fred Falke – Intro; just some of the tunes that influenced her early direction and considered to be classics today.
Self-taught with some handy tips and tricks from others along the way, Emme’s first break came when she won a DJ competition at Sydney institution DCM in 2004. A residency there followed, and Emme has since spun everything from deep house to funky, sexy and soulful sounds to full hands-in-the-air vocal bombs to dancefloors across the harbour city – not to mention as far afield as Adelaide, Jindabyne, Bathurst, and Newcastle. Some of Emme’s proudest achievements include spinning alongside the live/DJ hybrid act La Fiesta Sound System at Hugo’s and Opera Bar, dropping nothing but quality house music sounds in a well-respected residency for Musik Matters, plus a long-standing residency at The Bank Hotel in Newtown where spinning the sounds of labels like Defected alongside like-minded remixes of more commercial acts has helped point her in the direction of more intensity filled main room sets. More recently she’s supported UK house music legends Tom Middleton and Graeme Park as the only female resident DJ of Dig Deep Promotions (High Flyers) and showcased her mélange of musical tastes as an integral member of the Musicology club night at venues like Potts Point hotspot Goldfish, while her recent credits include a New Years Eve gig in Beijing China in 2012.
