This song was inspired by the book 'Widow of the South' by Robert Hicks. The book tells the story of Carrie McGavock who owned a plantation during the American Civil War in the 1860's and how she eventually had almost 1,500 soldiers buried in her back yard.
Rather than let someone plow over the field where the soldiers lay, she dug them up with the help of friends and local people and reburied them in her own personal cemetery. The book gives a very graphic insight into the perils of the soldier in those times.
