About

Dr Das is a bassist, performer, composer, producer and remixer.

He was one of the founder members and original bassist of Asian Dub Foundation (ADF) where he established his reputation for playing deep, melodic and cyclical basslines.

He left ADF in 2006, to return to his roots in experimental music. His sound, combining dub with noise has been influenced by the distorted rhythms of Muslimgauze, the percussive minimalism of 23 Skidoo and the intense dark funk of 70s Miles Davis. The work of Scientist and earlier more abstract On-U Sound recordings are also an inspiration.

Dr Das's first solo album "Emergency Basslines" was released in 2006 on VU Recordings. He has two more album sets "Preparing 4 War" (originally written 2002) and Sunandamala Vol 1 (2006) which will be re-mastered and released in 2012. A newer set "Outsider Dub" is earmarked for release in 2013 and will feature guest musicians, predominantly from the world of experimental jazz.

He is a long time producer with the label/activists Indigenous Resistance (IR) and has remixed Maga Bo, Susheela Raman and Bant Singh Project (india).

2012 sees him working on his first feature film soundtrack with Belgian director Nabil Ben Yadir. He'll also be joining Barcelona based 'deep pop' project 08001, both in the studio and live. Their next album is to be produced by Howie B.

As a bassist, Dr Das has played and/or recorded with a variety of 'world,' jazz and electronic musicians such as Dub Colossus (Real World), Baba Zula, Visionary Underground, Paban Das Baul, Sridhar & Thayil, State of Bengal, Janaka Selekta, Deeder Zaman (ADF's original rapper), Transglobal Underground, Arun Ghosh and Red Cardell.

Dr Das has performed his solo project in the UK, US, France, Belgium and Czech Republic. His current live band "Dubnoiz Quintet" introduces more explicit jazz elements and consists of himself on bass, Bantu on sequencing and noise, Ramjac on congas & percussion, John Martin on saxophones and Scal on electric guitar. Emphasis is based upon interaction and 'dubprovisation.'
