Apart from late Beefheart, one could also think of Jimmy Giuffre, or Scott Johnson… so it stands in a tradition of its own, but a very likable tradition, and it's really fun to listen to.

certainly a late beefheart quality about the guitar parts, and even the drums in this piece, a delight to my ears.
