foi oi oi & What the Bleep - Feelings for Detroit Vol. 6: Water Sound

Rooted in a friendship formed in 2004, foi oi oi and What the Bleep are tag team partners hailing from Ohio. "Ragga jungle" is the most accurate label used to describe what they play – as they are junglists that lean toward reggae-influenced styles – but they truthfully are not bound by any specific genre. Instead, their focus is on a positive bass music experience with undertones of ragga and dubwise. Their mindfulness of a dancefloor’s needs is reflected in their diverse selection of drum & bass, juke, footwork, roots dubstep, dub reggae, dancehall, and more.

As their individual musical tastes matured over the years, their duo performance evolved into something much greater than the sum of the parts. Recently they released another iteration of their widely-popular annual mixtape in honor of their Detroit Electronic Music Festival tradition. Each year they attend the festival, perform at afterparties, and spread their junglist sound as "brothers". This year’s CD release took on a new greatly-refined form, fluidly transitioning through a surprising multiplicity of sound: "Feelings for Detroit Vol. 6: Water Sound". And in July 2012, to open the floodgates for new ears to experience a refreshing bass music experience, they are embarking on a CD-release East Coast mini-tour: "foi oi oi & What the Bleep’s Water Sound Voyage".

By the way, in case anyone downloaded the tracked-mp3 version (for burning your own CD, or just generally giving you the ability to skip through tracks), I apologize, but the wrong was included in the description. The correct version is now! http://djwhatthebleep.com/recordings/foi_oi_oi_%26_What_the_Bleep_-_Feelings_for_Detroit_Vol_6_-_Water_Sound.zip

"Feelings for Detroit Vol. 6 by foi oi oi & What The Bleep covers all the bases in terms of what makes a DJ mix great in my opinion. It takes the audience on a truly amazing journey through sound, full of unexpected twist and turns, that make it a one of a kind listening experience. Not only is it a great listen but it is also a highly motivating source of inspiration for aspiring DJ's like myself to learn from."

How can a DJ mix be both seductive yet aggressive? Nostalgic yet progressive? Traditional yet unique? The answer lies in foi oi oi & What The Bleep's "Feelings For Detroit vol. 6 Water Sound". This mix reminds me of all the reasons I fell in love with Ragga Jungle and continue to love it today! Its duality is the key to its effectiveness. Those warm melodic valleys make the lofty, percussive, bass heavy peeks seem even higher. It's the dramatic build to the crescendo that makes this mix so powerful. The same orgasmic climax that made Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" benchmarks in music history. Aside from its diversity and structure, this is a journey through Ragga Jungle history. Most definitely not your garden variety mix of "Jungle hits" you hear regurgitated time and time again. The intellect, passion, talent and knowledge it took to create a mix of this caliber is a rare and beautiful thing. Something that will make this mix relevant and important now and 20 years from now. I look forward to hearing more from foi oi oi and What The Bleep. The Stranger

If anyone was not fortunate enough to get a physical copy and yet wants to have a "tracked" mp3 version (where you can skip through tracks, ideal for a CD), go ahead and download the zip file and burn it: http://djwhatthebleep.com/recordings/What_the_Bleep_%26_foi_oi_oi_-_Peelings_for_Detroit_Vol_5.zip

If you *REALLY* want a physical copy, though (which there are VERY few), stay tuned for a small contest of sorts. We'll be giving away (i.e. mailing one to) a few to some online peoples.

@Labelless Records: Of course we had to include a couple Labelless Tune. There are some dope tracks forthcoming which I'm looking forward to having on vinyl. Semi-Automatic crept up on us as a mix opener; we originally were going to be putting the Don't Stop The Rock / The License combo at the start, but we eventually agreed that we had to start with some proper jungle! Vocoda did that nicely. Sorry about the name typo, though.

@Jordan Foudray and @Spastik: we're also very happy with that ending with Charlie Chaplin and Elainor Rigby. @foi oi oi had the idea to end with the speech pretty early on in the mix-making process. When he was looking for an ambient track to layer underneath, he jokingly played that track ("Haha, The Beatles") and then we both instantly stared at each other. It was a perfect match, and one by a perfect chance encounter.
