DJ Travis Kell

Hailing originally from the Toronto area, Travis was surrounded by a rich all ages dance scene. Due to it's proximity to Detroit and Chicago, artists such as Ritchie Hawtin, Terry Mullan, DJ Sneak, Jason Hodges, Mark Farina and Derrick May frequently blessed Toronto with their musical blends. Every weekend would play host to massive warehouse parties offering a plethora of styles, ranging from the soulful feel of Chicago to the slightly industrial and techno sounds of Detroit. A born dancer with rhythm in his bones, Travis took full advantage of this wonderful scene.

At the age of Eighteen, the passing of his Grandfather marked the beginning of what would be an illustrious career as a DJ for Travis. Taking advantage of some money left to him, Travis purchased his first set of decks, two grey 1983 Technics 1200's and a Rane mixer sourced from a mobile wedding DJ service who were converting to CD format. Shopping took place at Traxx records in Toronto with guidance from Tim Patrick. In 1993 Travis moved to London Ontario to attend University and within a year had set up Top Notch Productions. He promoted and held several parties in the next few years attracting such names as Vitamin D, Czech, Mark Farina and Gene Farris. The parties were family affairs of 200-400 people with musical influence placed on funky house and west coast breaks. Travis never did DJ at any of his own parties, watching attentively always, but keeping to his bedroom knowing that there would be a time and a place but respecting that this craft would take years to fine tune. Toronto was never too far away and many Saturdays were spent tripping into Toronto for some excellent parties courtesy of Transcendence, Dose, Destiny and Better Days.

In 1996 Travis graduated from University and after four years of promoting and partying he knew it was time for a change. The barrier between artist and promoter would have to be crossed. That spring he loaded all of his personal belongings, decks and records into his car and drove 2000 miles west to Vancouver where he planned to work in the Provincial Parks of British Columbia. He was stationed on a small island in the Gulf island chain and there he lived for the next two years, running and managing this park in the peace and isolation of the ocean and evergreen trees. There was no electricity at the Ranger station but he was able to run his decks from a Generator in the workshop. New records were purchased on day trips to Vancouver and Victoria and mixing sessions were a plenty. Occasional parties were thrown, all outdoors for full moon occasions and summer solstice celebrations. Travis' first live sets were at these parties, mainly the closing sets from 6:00 am onwards, a slot which Travis came to embrace. His style of deep percussive, soulful house was perfect for these early mornings…

The year 1998 saw Travis move to Vancouver, extremely apt in the art of mixing house music. He started Top Notch Productions back up in order to provide him a platform on which to perform. He DJ'd and ran a successful night, the weekly Deep Funk Tribal Thursdaze as well as a monthly Boat party called Houseboat.

Both events emphasised funky house and attracted an eclectic yet sexy clientele. The summer brought a full roster of full moon parties held in some very remote locations across the province. These were mainly full weekend camping excursions and Travis would delight crowds with his sunrise forays. He stayed in Vancouver until 2001 and this year was capped off by headlining the Earthdance festival in Calgary alongside long time musical influence Joeski from New York. This audience of 2500 was by far the largest Travis had ever played in front of and he stepped up raising the roof off this sporting arena.

Returning to Vancouver after this event, Travis found himself dreaming of far off places. It was again, time for a change. Driven by his desire to branch out globally Travis decided to move to the UK in an attempt to broaden his listenership and horizons.

Travis has been residing in London England since 2001. He has picked up a residency at Smile and has been a guest at various other bars across London such as Oblivion, the Cross, the Fridge, the Viaduct, Turnmills and Bagley's. He has travelled to Amsterdam and Portugal to DJ and has thoroughly enjoyed playing to such diverse crowds…

He also has held down a weekly radio show on Unknownfm.com 90.2 London called Believe since 2002. He has a great following of house music connoisseurs who love his late night sessions from midnight Tuesdays…

On December 26, 2003 Travis flew to Russia for two gigs in Kazan and Yekaterinbourg. These were massive gigs arranged by www.dancefloor.ru and Travis delighted the crowds with his funky and positive blend of House music…It was here that Travis met Roman Pushkin…the start of a great friendship…

New Years 2003 saw Travis headlining Dirty Havana, a Cuban/Latin infused party which was an excellent show and in March 2004 International DJ Magazine (IDJ) chose him as runner up in their monthly mixed tape competition.

Travis toured Canada in the summer of 2004 playing gigs in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal. This was a great summer travelling and most importantly springing his old records out of storage to bring back to the UK…

In 2005 Travis was invited back to Russia to play alongside Roman Pushkin and Tim Kryctov for various parties in St Petersburg and Moscow. He also played several venues across London and the South West.

2006 brought return voyages to Russia and the opportunity to play in the remote Ural region in Magnitagorsk and Ufa...and as well as a massive baot party in St Petersburgh with the dance planet crew.

As the years passed and Believe became more and more popular Travis started to really fine tune his musical styles...thanks to the work of such briilliant producers like joey youngman and bryan jones jack came back to house and for Travis this unique up tempo jazz blend perfectly fit his block rockin style...

In 2008 Travis hooked up with a group of like minded househeads on www.chicagohousefm.com ...he started his first show on canada day (july 1st) and continued on from his previous believe broadcasts...he can now be heard every tuesday from 11pm GMT (6pm EST)...

At 34 years of age Travis is now just entering into his musical prime. He is a passionate performer, impeccable mixer and down to earth guy who is always up for the opportunity to grace the decks with his funky presence…

this is an absolutely superb track and right up my alley...it has a mild and not overpowering tech edge which is complimented very nicely by a real bounce....the samples and stabs are eloquent and well placed and it has an overall busy but not too busy flow...well done to high maintenance on this, i hope i will have as much fun destroying dancefloors with this beauty as they did making it!
