About

After picking up the drumsticks in his early teens, this turntable virtuoso started DJ’ing at the age of 16 and has been making his mark in the clubs for the past fourteen years. His musical journey has brought him to play practically every club in Holland and perform in front of thousands at popular national events like Mysteryland, FFWD Dance Parade, Amsterdam Dance Event, Latin Village and Dance Valley. He’s no stranger to international festivals either, where he’s graced the stage at both the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and world-renowned Glastonbury Festival.

Known in the clubs as the quick-fingered mixing maestro, his name is now interminably linked with his very own, aptly dubbed, Foktop! sound – best described as an exhilarating mix of house, hip hop, electro, breakbeat, garage and baile funk. This Foktop! sound is what DJ Rockid continues to conquer the world with in 2010. His focus now firmly on the Foktop! record label and thriving party concept that he created together with long time buddy Dan Stezo (of the popular Dutch Electronic Hiphop formation, theFringe). Additionally, Rockid remains productive in the studio, remixing as well as collaborating with the likes of Oliver Twizt (‘Drop it to the Floor’), Veron (‘Balkanism’), Randy Santino (‘Kung Fu Master’) and Jaimie Fanatic (‘The Whip’).

DJ Rockid set a solid foundation for his success many years ago: Born in South-Korea, Rockid learned to love music from an early age. After moving to Holland, his interest in music developed further and the turntable soon became his instrument of choice. Starting out playing hip-hop tunes, he learned the art scratching and decided to hone his skills by entering the DMC DJ championships in 1998. It was there things first exploded – Dj Rockid didn’t only rock the house, he also went on to become the Dutch DMC champion five years in row and represented Holland all the way to the finals in New York, London & Paris!

With an extensive list of titles to his name, Rockid brought his sound back to the club where he rocked the dance floors with his uniquely fresh style – combining his Hiphop roots with electronic Dance music. Alongside his club career, Rockid has extensively toured as a scratch DJ with other musicians. He’s spun for breakbeat/crossover band Headfirst, The League of X-traordinary Gentlemen, Zuco 103 and rappers E-life and Postmen. Internationally he’s been a supporting act for world famous artists like Busta Rhymes, Beyonce, Craig David and Nelly.

In 2008 Laidback Luke included DJ Rockid’s track “Girls” onto his live mix CD for Stealth Records. This created a buzz in the Dance scene, earning him a seventh place listing in the Beatport electro charts and instant international recognition as a producer.

2009 saw the release of many fresh solo tracks as well as a number of exciting collaborations including ‘Double Dutch Buzz’ with Jaimie Fanatic and ‘Badmen’ featuring Lady Bee. Foktop! also dropped their first Mixtape, which contains a bunch of original Rockid material, and recorded an exclusive Foktop! mix for The Sneakerz Wintermix Triple CD. Gig wise Rockid’s performances at Dancevalley’s Dum Dum Trailer Park and The City is Yours Festival were definitely some of the most memorable highlights of the year.

So there it is: The Rockid story in a nutshell. An artist who never sits still and from whom we can always expect the unexpected!
