About
Born in Baghdad, raised in New Delhi, and now expanding further around the world spreading his message of universal brotherhood and cross-cultural understanding through the common denominator of music - Mohammed Abood a.k.a. DJ MoCity is a music entrepreneur unique in the Arab & Asian markets. The multi-talented music entrepreneur is poised to accumulate accomplishments & achievements at an international level throughout the rest of his career.
At the young age of 26 years old, Mohammed is truly a global citizen of the new millenium, already having lived and worked in 4 nations - Iraq, India, Malaysia & Turkey - all the while, leaving his indelible imprint on the local cultural scenes. It is no understatement to say that he is respected and admired by hundreds of musical artists and thousands of fans around the world – and not just the ones on Facebook! Mo City has made a name for himself as a passionate and reliable music entrepreneur, adept at various roles, trades and crafts in the industry and focused on connecting music fans with music creators.
DJ / MC / Promoter / Festival Programer / Booker /Artist Manager / Social Media Specialist / Music Entrepreneur - it’s true Mo City wears many hats, but underneath the style and swagger is still the young teenager Mohammed who got fascinated and immersed in hip hop music and culture while following his elder brother around to parties and shows. Mohammed’s family had moved to India in the early 1990’s when his father was posted as General Manager of Iraqi Airways in India. At the time, New Delhi was not really known for its modern cultural output, and although the young Mohammed soaked in what he could during his formative years, he soon found himself creating opportunities for young people to express themselves that would contribute to transforming the cultural landscape of the nation’s capital. Mohammed started organizing and promoting events from the young age of 19 years old in 2007 at the landmark local nightclub Decibel. With this direct experience, he developed street smarts quickly and concentrated on learning the in’s & out’s of the music and live entertainment industries in India.
Since then he has successfully booked and promoted over 1,000 events featuring some of the most high-profile artists to visit India and even programmed entire Festival stages for audiences of over 10,000 people at a time. As a skilled DJ and MC himself, as his tastes evolved to reggae and caribbean music culture, Mo City developed the Reggae Rajahs, India’s true ambassadors of this global movement. Over 4 years of hard work and relentless gigging and touring Reggae Rajahs have now risen to the uppermost ranks of independent music in the country, selling out clubs and headlining festival stages. This perspective as an artist and performer himself has allowed him to excel as an Artist Manager as well, not only helping dozens of independent artists develop their careers but also helping corporations and institutions interface with the talent effectively for everyone’s mutual benefit. In the midst of all this, Mo City somehow found time to be a founding partner of the Imported Go(o)ds music website and online community – a unique avenue into making cross-country connections in the world of global dance music.
In March 2012, he was recognized for his work with a full-time job as Artist & Event Properties Executive at Only Much Louder, one of the country’s most esteemed media & entertainment enterprises. Also that year, Mohammed started stepping out of India in a big way. Opportunities and offers arose in Austria, Norway, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Malaysia, and Turkey – and Mo City could no longer be confined to just one country. His relentless energy and unbounding passion for music, community and cultural exchange led him on an epic journey of discovery and learning - and as only Mo City could, he eschewed the traditional “First World” cultural capitals of New York or London or Berlin, and instead pursued wherever the winds of opportunities drove him to. In fact, much of Mo City’s work is dedicated to, and indeed already demonstrates, that the future global music icons of tomorrow won’t come from just the developed world, but could arise out of anywhere the seeds of inspiration have been sown. And if things go right, Mo City will be there to guide the blossoming music into the light.
