London based DJ Asterix has been Djing for the past 19 years both in the Uk and overseas. He really loves his music and, as a child, was inspired by his parents broad musical tastes. Hazy, yet fond, memories of long car journeys listening to anything from the Stones to Charlie Parker to Floyd.
The son of a Jazz drummer he progressed through the teachings of Buddy Rich learning paradiddles and mummy-daddy rolls and at the age of 14 set up his first indie/rock band at school "The new found faith". They wrote and recorded one album and gigged across the westcountry.
It was at Uni in London in 1989 where he discovered his love of Djing inspired by close friends Ewan McNeil (Def E - Nocturnal - Downtown records) and Stuart (Sonic - Portsmouth) who had both been playing largely US house and garage for sometime. Things were really kicking off in London and Asterix was hugely inspired by the Crazy club at the Astoria, the Clink Street Partys as well as the legendary Loughborough Pk (Brixton) squat partys hosted by Micky Daley (Energy), Fabio and Groove, Tin tin, the man like the Jumping Jack Frost, and Bryan Gee (V recordings).
As the meagre student loan dwindled away the record collection slowly grew!
In 1993 he moved to Canada representing MCA (Uk),as well as Pete Tongs` London records` offshoot - FFRR. His first Canadian gigs were at Toronto`s first legal all night dance venue - The Tunnel Club supporting the likes of Mark Oliver, John E, and Kofi.
He then set up Cultural vibes, an events company (named in honour of Cultural vibes uk) challenging the likes of Mike Steins` Pleasure Force, Syrous and Destiny. Using regular shows on Energy 108fm (Drivetime with Scot Turner) and MTV (Electric Circus) and North Americas YTV, to promote their events, the Cultural vibes word spread slowly across North America.
A highlight, New Years Eve 1994, saw Asterix supporting Deelite (Groove is in the heart) in blizzard battered downtown Toronto and it was shortly after this he supported Derricks` May and Carter at a massive 5000 people "Better days" party in a huge film studio on Toronto`s east side.
Returning to England in late 1994 he was made resident at "Fusions" and together with Matt B took control of both Tuesday and Friday nights. In 1995 Mixmag voted Fusions` Tuesday night as one of their top ten favourite nights in the country. Gigs around the country ensued, Naughty but nice in Hereford with Dave Dorrel and Alistair Whitehead, The sound factory - Plymouth with Paul Honey and Cultural vibes dj`s and the legendary beach partys on the south coast with Matt B, Dean Lambert, and Graham Gold.
2005 saw Asterix move to London as resident at "Alphabet", in the heart of Soho, and in 2006 he joined www.innacityfm.com broadcasting his weekly Sunday show via the world wide web. Recent activity has included Gigs at Dex in Brixton, Circle bar in Clapham, Juno in Shoreditch, Overdose in Norwich and more boat Partys on the good ship Wilfred down at Temple Pier on the river Thames!
With regards his music...well....just listen....and hey...if you like it then thats just great!
His current show "The Sunday roast" is broadcast each and every Sunday from 8pm - 10pm on www.innacityfm.com
