Hard graft and good fortune have combined to pay big dividends for rising European DJ talent Aleksandar Glisic.
Bosnian Serb disc-spinner Aleksandar (aka DJ Alex) has been slogging away for five years in his native Republika Srpska, building an audience at grassroots venues as well as warming larger crowds for techno luminaries such as Marko Nastic and Valentino Kanzyani.
Now his floor-filling sets are reaping rewards, including a recent (June 2008) booking from an experienced UK promoter to play London’s prestigious Pacha club alongside some of Britain’s most talked-about talent. With a London booking under his belt, Aleksandar is hotter than ever in Bosnia and surrounding nations.
Aleksandar comes from the potent DJ breeding ground of South Eastern Europe, where he has carved out a name playing the region’s best known venues alongside play-mates Sinisa Tamamovic and Mladen Tomic (Night Light Records: Banja Luka).
With his electro and minimal house sets, Bosnian Alex, 23, couldn’t be better placed to benefit from the clubbing explosion in the Balkan region. Banja Luka is rapidly becoming party central for techno and minimal lovers, staking its claim alongside Belgrade and the region’s other club zones: Skopje, Sarajevo, Ljubljana and Zagreb.
Using borrowed equipment and blagging lifts, Aleksandar got his first gigs in 2003, securing residencies at popular bars in Banja Luka. Two years later he had enough money to buy the decks he had coveted in imported trade magazines and he was well and truly on the road.
That was the start of an endless string of gigs on the Bosnian clubbing circuit, developing his style, reputation and sound. Now boasting experience alongside some of techno’s leading lights, Alex is advancing to the next international chapter in his career.
Alex namechecks some of the region’s major players as key influencers who have propelled him this far… and look set to take him further still: Marko Nastic, Valentino Kanzyani, Dejan Milicevic, Sinisa Tamamovic, Mladen Tomic, Alexander Koning, Thomas Schumacher, Guy Gerber, Sven Vath, John Tejada, Oliver Huntemann, Tiga, Tiefschwarz, Pacco, Oxia, Mark Romboy and Preach.
