"Joni Mitchell never lied" - Q Tip

Joni Mitchell wrote and recorded "Big Yellow Taxi" in 1970.
Mitchell said this about writing the song to journalist Alan McDougall in the early 1970s:

I wrote 'Big Yellow Taxi' on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart... this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song.

Janet Jackson & Q Tip sampled the song for Janet's "Got Til It's Gone" in 1997. Production of "Got 'til It's Gone" was officially credited to Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. However, the hip hop collective The Ummah (composed of Q-Tip, J Dilla, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) contest that they are the actual producers of the track.

Either way, both songs are beautiful and I enjoyed making a hybrid of sorts.
