Have you ever stopped and asked a DJ why they chose to call themselves the name they have? Some have some pretty unique stories but none compare to DJ Shapes. Formerly known as David Arnold, a young man who enjoyed eating the biscuits that us Aussie know as ‘Shapes’. BBQ Shapes, Chicken Salt, Bacon & Cheese, the list goes on and which all David has enjoyed. From one passion to another is how David
’s industry name was formed – DJ Shapes!
DJ Shapes brought the term ‘for the love of music’ back to life when he brought his unique rhythm to the world’s attention. His embarking journey to make his name a household name that everyone fist-pumps to is just a bonus to his undoubtedly fast growing career.
Passion formed into determination, DJ Shapes furthered his skills by buddying up with a local DJ Ben Malcolm, who generously showed David the ropes in the industry, allowing David to follow along to local pubs were the nightlife was full of energy and people ready to dance and be entertained. Introducing him into a bigger world of dance music, Malcolm had passed on his knowledge and fire for the sport to David, including Malcolm’s equipment whilst Malcolm decided to travel overseas. Within a short few months DJ Shapes had made a name for him and was playing at the local clubs of The riverina, New South Wales.
Wanting more from the industry DJ Shapes was hired by a local radio host from Wagga Wagga to DJ even more events around the Riverina. Meeting new people along the way allowed DJ Shapes to get his name out there as much as he could, which lead to even being able to DJ parties in Sydney, NSW. It was official; DJ Shapes was in the business and ready to embark on a bigger journey.
Whilst DJ Shapes continued to climb his mountain of success, he got to enjoy the company of other DJ’s around the area. Originally being from Darwin, Northern Territory but moving to Wagga Wagga New South Wales in 2010 didn’t stop him from keeping in contact with close mates in Darwin who also shared the love of music. Expressing his interests of his own event in Wagga to mates in Darwin, he was able to start brain storming with mates who were also interested in the idea of an event held in Wagga. Expressing the interest more to other local DJ’s in Wagga he was able to come up with the event ‘Transfusion’.
‘Transfusion’ took place in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales in 2011, with DJ’s coming from all over Australia including ACT, QLD and the Northern Territory. David was determined to strive for more and was successfully able to provide Australian grown ‘Peking Duk’ to play at ‘Transfusion’. ‘Transfusion’ was a hit! Despite only being an underage event, the event was able to bring the 5,000 people to their feet and their fists in the air.
With having his first successful event under his belt DJ Shapes continued to strive for great music, he spends hours a day working on new mashes and new ideas for music he can provide to the keen ears of his supporters.
Ready for more adventure and experience, David returned to Darwin to challenge himself with a different atmosphere. Not taking him long to gain more gigs, he was soon working for The Beachfront Hotel. Knowing that he was playing for a more relaxed and chilled crowd, DJ Shapes still had the magic spin and had people on their feet.
After 6 months in Darwin, DJ Shapes has returned to Wagga Wagga to take on more challenges and continue embarking on his mission. Despite being based back in Wagga Wagga, didn’t stopped David from flying back and forth to Darwin to play at gigs such as ‘Paradise Music Festival 2012’ and another underage event ‘Pulsation’.
With an urge to host another event, DJ Shapes is looking to expand again, gathering more ideas for another event to be held in Wagga Wagga and considering attending bigger events such as Foreshore held in Canberra, if the timing is right.
To this date he has supported names such as Peking Duk, The Only, Bombs Away, DJ Kronic, Seany B, Will k, Dj Flash, Muscles, 3 bit djs, Rob Pix, Rave Radio and much much more!
DJ Shapes has his sights set on the disco ball that hangs with high standards. He continues to push himself everyday with new music and ideas. Being a DJ is only half of David Arnold, music is his passion and his family and friends are his support that brings him back to earth whenever it may begin to get too much.
Ready to take on the world, I would like to introduce DJ Shapes
