As a debut 12" release for both DJ Marfox and Príncipe, "Eu Sei Quem Sou" ("I Know Who I Am") is the best title we could hope for our collective present & future intentions. It is what Marfox has always made clear to us through his work - a unique vision of technological, artistic and civic advancement. Everything is about having your code, knowing where you come from; about the way in which he's chosen to progress through his music.
Marfox, who was born in the former Portuguese colony of São Tomé e Príncipe, is a downright urban, suburban and ghetto legend in Lisbon. He was already a teenage prodigy producer and DJ, and his first hits (on YouTube, through mp3’s that have been floating around and in the mythical 'DJ's di Ghetto' compilation, done with his crew of the same name) have taken him to an iconic status in Portugal and in a number of African communities in Europe, as well as with a worldwide network of dedicated seekers of new developments in this sound territory & culture.
This EP includes four archetypal instant classics - a block party banger, a brilliant percussion workout, a technoid epic (baroque, dark & mazy) and the best garage&rt;kuduro piece we've heard so far. It's all 100% batida (instrumental kuduro) produced by one of its (very young) visionaries, tangible evidence as to the kind of benign damage that DJ Marfox will be inflicting for years to come. It displays the enormous power of his music and the core aesthetic matrices that he works with. Bass and percussion are built for maximum impact, the several rhythmical elements virtuously designed to fully affect you in both body & mind, yet they're extremely intricate, rich and focused on continuous advancement of form and metrics.
The melody lines and leads, hitting you across the whole sound spectrum, from sub-woofer transmissions to dimly lit keyboards, come at you with brutal poetics, and are the exclusive domain of peripheral Lisbon, an ample piece of land with a new set of cultural standards, personality and artistic singularities that start their worldwide reaching transmissions here.
