FIRST RUNNER-UP: John Digweed, Bedrock & Beatport - Structures DJ Competition (2011)
“Another favourite with the judges, a full-on energetic mix that pumps from start to finish.”
"A really good DJ can play music to people that they've never heard before, but programmed in such a way that they love it."
Somewhere in the post-acid and pre-filter era, Allegro began asserting his passion for underground dance music and the art of DJing. Through his early efforts and with the support of Calgary’s premier record shops, Allegro’s mixes found their way into the retail boutiques of 17th Avenue. Allegro’s compilations were soon in-demand and performance opportunities followed. By the late 1990s, Allegro assumed his turn as resident and host of the relatively propitious Java Sharks’ lower level.
Based in Winnipeg through the early to mid 2000s, Allegro made guest and headline appearances at countless special events and held residencies at numerous clubs and lounges.
Returning to Calgary in 2005, Allegro continued to make select appearances in both Calgary and Winnipeg while servicing commissions for sound design and remix work for Calgary’s salon and fashion industry.
In 2011, after being short-listed from over 130 entries, Allegro bested DJs from around the world claiming First-Runner Up honours in John Digweed’s Bedrock, Beatport, Structures Two DJ Mix Competition. An “all-star jury” comprised of Oliver Lieb, Nick Muir, King Unique, Robert Babicz and John Digweed conferred the distinction and in Digweed’s words described Allegro’s effort as a “favourite with the judges, a full-on energetic mix that pumps from start to finish.” Allegro’s online presence has since attracted listeners from over 60 countries.
Crafted and deliberate, expansive yet articulate, Allegro’s unmistakable sound and meticulous programming offers an accessible yet challenging escape, “...from start to finish.”
