These are the Breaks! All broken beat genre's, all the time!
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a total sucker for nostalgia. Usually my live sets end with a handful of classics. Not only to take people back to the early days of electronic music but also to show how timeless some of the music from that time really is. A lot of people say they don’t make music the way they used to anymore, it’s not the same. To those people I say, you just aren’t looking hard enough.
This mix has been in the making for quite some time. I have been collecting this music over the years and a few recent releases have made completion of this set possible. This is not a new mix of old school music. It is compiled of modern music (within the last 5 or so years) that, in some way, resembles the music of days gone by. Beyond that, it is inspired by the memories I have of the many late nights I spent at The Abyss and I am very excited to finally be able to share it. I hope the intention behind this mix comes through.
A lot of credit has been given to Aahz for building the foundation for the Orlando electronic music scene, and rightly so. However, long overdue is the time to pay homage to a special place, built by people with a unique vision, that was The Abyss. Those were truly special times! Though I don’t recall ever meeting Dj’s D-Xtreme or Stylus, I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to them! Thank you for taking us there, for all the memories and most of all, even after all these years, for inspiring me.
For those people who never had the opportunity to experience The Abyss, this statement by The Mix Spot pretty much sums up what it was about…
“The Abyss was one of the first clubs in Orlando to introduce Electronica to Orlando. Started by Najib Elmasri (Hawk), following the footsteps of Aahz, The Edge & Big Bang, The Abyss became known for it's different take on Breakbeats & House. D-Xtreme & Stylus piloted the ship and brought a new sound that no other DJs were playing. Every night would be a classic night as the two DJs opened up new doorways for other inspiring DJs and for fans. Stylus had a style like no other that was a cross between Intelligent Breaks & Progressive sounds. D-Xtreme was infatuated by the European sound so he would bring UK breaks & house and mix it with the old school at that time. The club became legendary and to this date it has never been reproduced or emulated. For those that were there it was a magical time.”
