Discovering Verdi - Listen to Anna Netrebko singing "Merce, dilette amiche" from the final act of the opera “I Vespri Siciliani” (1855). The character Elena gives thanks to all and sings of her happiness shortly before her wedding to Arrigo, however what she does not foresee at that point, is the impending massacre on the enemy, who at the same time is her soon-to-be-father-in-law.

Although the opera is not considered mainstream repertoire, the aria is popular due to its happy nature. It is a breath of fresh air into the normally gloomy and intense arias present in Verdi’s grand operas.
