Cocktail drums are perhaps my guiltiest pleasure as an arranger, and when stirred into a mix of upright bass with untaped fingers, two over-paid percussionists (one of whom, at least, also vocalizes in an unexpectedly but evocative falsetto), acoustic guitar, vibes, electric piano, one trombone, one trumpet and a flute soloist -- well, you're getting somewhere then.The icing, of course, is the 18 piece string section. There's no guest saxophonist for this unfinished sketch, just a pricey Brazilian bossa band by way of downtown L.A. As for me, I'll be at the bar, wearing sunglasses and sipping cachaça with lime and a splash of soda while waiting to see if this version works for the director. Waiting on the director, in the director's many incarnations, fills so many of my hours. The drink, at least, is nice.
