Some say the name Defunk alludes to the removing and de-construction of the elements of funk, creating something quite the opposite such as the likes of glitch or uniquely formed beats. Others say the name implies the use of a funk structure, incorporating bouncing bass and fast paced drum rhythms. Any way you try to interpret this Canadian bass producers name, it would be wrong. And right at the same time.

Defunk has a style unto his own. Shortly put, imagine Egyptian tribal sounds, infused with glitch hop speed and unpredictability, with drumstep’s unrelenting force and smashing sub. Defunk creates everything from dirty bellydance and slow, sexy tribal fusion, to grime ridden drumstep, and James Brown styled ghetto funk. He plays and produces whatever he is feeling, but you can usually guarantee it’s got a little bit of a foreign spice to it.
