Dee Montero’s DJ career began when he won the Vestax mixing championships at age 17 in 1995. This led to him securing his first residency at the infamous Network club in his native town of Belfast where he played alongside the likes of Dave Seaman, Brandon Block and Parks & Wilson.
In 2000, when the Network club shut its doors, Dee packed his bags and headed for the White Isle – Ibiza. Thinking he would only last three weeks of the season he not only survived his first, but also returned for the following five seasons taking up residency at legendary venues Cafe Mambo, Pacha, Space and Amnesia.
On the production side Dee has produced over 40 tracks under the pseudonym Montero, including the monster ‘Captain Hook’ on Renaissance which hit the No.1 spot simultaneously on Beatport, DJ Mag’s Hype Chart and DJ Download where it still remains in the all-time Top 10. His tracks have seen airplay on Pete Tong’s Essential Selection, have featured on Global Underground & Renaissance compilations, and Sasha even pressed his own personal dubplate before the CDJs became ubiquitous.
In 2010, Montero launched the digital imprint Montero Grooves focusing on own productions while showcasing up-and-coming talent on remix duties. The first release ‘Testify?’ reached No.1 again on DJ Downloads and received instant support from Groove Armada and Nic Fancuilli.
In 2012 Dee based himself in Hong Kong where he brought over respected artists such as Aeroplane, Greg Wilson, Nic Fanciulli, Crazy P, Maxxi Soundsystem and Joris Voorn to the city aiming to push the scene forward and focusing on raising the awareness of quality underground music in Asia.
2013 will see him back on tour around the world and with a plethora of releases coming up on Montero Grooves, amongst some exciting remixes, you’re sure to expect to see more of him this year.
