deBonton 3rd Grab Bag

deBonton is a music label based in Paris that fights hard to dig deeper and keep electronic pop naïve and exciting. They draw from an eclectic and international scene to bring you a yearly compilation of unreleased tracks by artists who have vowed to take the machine out of machine music. Previous releases have ushered Logo (Kitsuné), Sydney Valette (Technikart's album of the year), and Yan Wagner (SXSW, Kitsuné, Blackstrobe Records) into the light. This is none other than the third iteration of the deBonton Grab Bag.

Frenchies Caandides start the party with “Before the Art”, an exuberant electro-folk tribute to the human unconscious and its protozoa of creativity. This is followed by the Quebecois outfit Chevalier Avant Guarde’s “Over The Fountain”. After their appearances at SXSW and Pop Montréal, it is rapidly becoming clear that their crystalline melancholia is heading for a higher orbit. Then it’s time for a robotic spiritual in the form of “Stratospheric Treasure Quest” by the Parisian Polocorp. Goodbye earth! The drumer of We Are Enfant Terrible joins the singer of folk outfit Louis Aguilar and the crocodiles tears for an astonishing partnership named Weekend Affair. The result is “Boxing Queen”, a whistling and playful romp. “The Fool” by Real Fur is a Jarvis Cocker approved track that finds the UK trio balancing their summery hooks with heart-wrenchingly earnest vocals. One of the three members of Paris (with Poni Hoax’s Nicolas Ker), Mike Theis brings “101 Problems” to the fold, an inter-planetary jam filled with celestial foreboding. Then it’s time for “Goodnight” by the Baltimorean Royal Native — a gorgeous and lush track that seems to harvest dreams from the bottom of the ocean. Ship Horn. The closing piece, “Bring Your Horses”, is a destroyer helmed by the Swedish duo Gidge. In their words: “We are the deafening silence of the snow. We are the stillness and the storm.” Beautiful and devastating.

deBonton est un label indépendant parisien qui se bat dure pour trouver la plus naïve et la plus passionnante pop électronique moderne. Il creuse dans une scène éclectique et internationale pour offrir une compilation annuelle rassemblant des titres inédits d'artistes qui ont juré d'humaniser la musique de machine. Les éditions précédentes ont vu émerger des artistes tels que Logo (Kitsuné), Sydney Valette (élu album de l'année 2011 par Technikart) et Yan Wagner (Kitsuné, Blackstrobe Records et moitié de Flying Turns). Ceci n'est autre que la troisième itération de la série deBonton Grab Bag.

Les petits Frenchies de Caandides ouvrent le bal avec « Before the Art », un exubérant hommage électro-folk à l'inconscient humain et son protozoaire de la créativité. S'ensuivent les Canadiens de Chevalier Avant Garde qui offrent « Over The Fountain ». Après des apparitions à SXSW et Pop Montréal, leur mélancolie cristalline se destinait naturellement à une orbite plus élevée. L'heure est venue d'entamer une quête spirituellement robotique nommée « Stratospheric Treasure Quest » guidée par le jeune producteur parisien Polocorp. Au revoir la terre ! Plus loin, la batterie survoltée de We Are Enfant Terrible rencontre la voix langoureuse de Louis Aguilar and the crocodiles tears dans une improbable collaboration nommée Weekend Affair. Résultat : le délicieux sucré-salé « Boxing Queen ». Avec « The Fool », titre chouchou de Jarvis Cocker (chanteur de Pulp), Real Fur balance un gimmick tristement estival et nous fige d'une voix arrache-cœur. Ensuite, un des trois membres de Paris (avec Nicolas Ker de Poni Hoax), Mike Theis pose sur la table « 101 problems », une mixture inter-planétaire aux appréhensions célestes. Il est maintenant l'heure d'un « Goodnight » des baltimoriens de Royal Native : magnifique et luxuriante pièce qui semblerait puiser ses songes du fin fond de l'océan. De la brume épaisse retentit un cor de chasse. L'heure de clôture approche. Les deux Suédois bipolaires de Gidge nous invitent pour un dernier tour de manège épique nommé « Bring Your Horses ». Selon eux : « Nous sommes le silence assourdissant de la neige. Nous sommes le calme et la tempête. » L'amour et la violence.
