In terms of the creative process, this song was a lesson in tuning in, letting go and not giving a shit. The main sample is from one of Daphne Oram's Oramics machines. Getting it to work was a sequencing nightmare: the loop of the Oramics sample wasn't perfect, so I had to program the drums by hand...quantizing was not an option. The result is a track with a slightly inconsistent tempo. I thought this was a great sonic metaphor for life and the heartbeat (which speeds up and slows down naturally depending on the requirements of LIFE). While I was at it, I decided to follow the lead of the lyrics and break another choice rule: I said a "Hail Mary" and added reverb to the bass.
Fuck it, you only live once. And since this is a satellite song, intended for transmission to interstellar space, I figured we wouldn't want the aliens to get the idea that humanity is perfect. Hope you enjoy.
