David Starfire is a producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. His production style is eclectic, fusing world music with electronic dance music, hip-hop and everything in between. He's performed at large festivals with some of the biggest electronic artists. His music is in high demand with tracks being licensed to major TV networks and commercials. He’s developed quite a following and his unique sound has created fans across the globe.
David is signed with the internationally known label Six Degrees Records, home to artists such as The Orb, Bebel Gilberto, Cheb i Sabbah, Karsh Kale, Michael Franti, Natacha Atlas and many others. His latest album "Ascend" was released Feb 2013 and in the first week it was #7 on the iTunes world music chart and # 5 on the RPM and World music radio charts on college and independent stations on CMJ. His debut album, “Bollyhood Bass" was released in 2010 and previous to that his EP "Bombay Beats" was released in 2007. He has released several singles on various compilations and has released 3 EP's as well including "Bollyhood Bass Remixes Vol 1 & 2" and "Jumpin Off".
David’s heritage is Creole and he follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Oscar Rouzan, who was a famous horn player in New Orleans and played with the likes of Paul Simon, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt and numerous other great artists. His aunt is Wanda Rouzan, who is also well known vocalist in the New Orleans jazz scene as one of the premier musical ambassadors. David started playing the guitar at 8 and by 17, he was composing, producing and recording songs in his bedroom and could play 5 instruments. He then gravitated towards electronic music production using sampling and programming drums. By 19, David was in a signed band and touring with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Filter and Skinny Puppy. After a brief solo career in NYC and several bands later, David moved to San Francisco and was part of the critically acclaimed band Cellophane Masses. Eventually his interest shifted towards producing world music mixed with electronic dance music and started incorporating ancient instruments from India and Africa with heavy bass music.
His signature sound landed him several DJ gigs at large scale international festivals all over the world such as Winter Music Conference, Coachella, Love Parade, Outside Lands, Musikmesse, Electric Picnic, Shambhala, Harmony, Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle and Earthdance. He’s performed at private parties and events for Lucas films, ILM, Samsung, Sprint, Google, Semens, Nokia, HP, Virgin Galactic, Roland, Digg, MacWorld, Flaunt Magazine, CAA and many others. He’s performed in cities across the world such as India, Canada, Australia and most major cities in Europe.. He also sets himself apart from other DJ’s by playing bass guitar and hand drums during his set, adding guest dancers and for special festival shows incorporates a live 8-15 piece band.
David’s songs are featured on several music compilations such as Lonely Planet, Red Bull, Craig’s List, Six Degrees, Starbucks and many more. He has songs are featured in video games, TV and cable programs such as Lie to Me (FOX), Outsourced (NBC), Live with Kelly Ripa (ABC), ESPN2, Fox Sports, MTV, MTV2, Fuse, Showtime, HBO, EA sports and a Right Guard commercial. He's a favorite in the belly dance community and is featured on several Bellydance DVD’s and CD’s including the Bellydance Superstars. He co-wrote and produced the 12” of the dance song “Radiation”, which was featured on the national top 20 CMJ independent dance charts. Over the years, David has collaborated with FreQ Nasty, Ooah (Glitch Mob), Cheb i Sabbah, Natacha Atlas, Information Society, Afrika Bambaataa, American Music Club, Wire Train and members of Beck.
David is constantly touring and his shows comprise of a solo performance or “Live Ensemble” that features live musicians, incredible vocalists and top-notch bellydancers for an exciting theatrical show. He’s also a founding member of the Dub Kirtan All Stars project with FreQ Nasty and performs audio/visual shows with VJ Culture under the name StarCulture.
