Ambient sound of ice expanding on and echoing through Teneya Lake, on Tioga Pass road in Yosemite National Park. Recorded Jan. 11, 2012, while area was in the midst of an almost unprecedented midwinter opening because of our extended no-rain, no-snow spell. Lots of incidental noise hear -- traffic on the road, people talking, people skidding along the ice, a kid crying off in the distance. But that the ice sound was extraordinary and haunting -- sounds something like "the song of the humpback whale" rising from the frozen depths of the lake.
