D-Jaw is the alias of Dan Bartholomew, a DJ, Producer and owner of the London based record label Bite Your Bottom Lip Recordings. Also known by his other alias Jake Jaeger, he has played abroad and in the UK alongside the likes of X-Press 2, Guido Schneider, Deep Groove, 2BadMice, Prodigy's Leeroy Thornhill and House legend Terrence Parker.
His love for underground House and Techno developed at an early age but stretches across all genres and he often plays alternative sets including carefully selected Reggae, Soul, Funk, Electronic 80’s, Rare Groove, Motown, Hip Hop and Club Classics. On occasion these sets are accompanied by a live singer with an extremely soulful voice who is actually his brother Dean Charles. Being artistic is something that comes from within and runs in their family, combine this with a few influential moments and you have the start of a passion that turned into a lifestyle choice and this has become a way of life.
During the 90's Dan was exposed to close friends and neighbours who shared his love for underground music, House, Jungle, Hardcore and Garage were all sounds of London at the time. Family members made sure to educate him on the roots of music movements from years gone by and this helped him build a huge collection of music. As any good selector knows, this counts for nothing without taste and an understand of when to play the right music at the right moment. At the turn of the century Dan could not contain his drive to be part of the scene any longer and he ventured abroad to develop his passion.
He worked on the Greek islands during the summer seasons as a barman and eventually blagged a set without even knowing how to beat match. He would return to the club during the day when it was closed to practice whilst no one was there and would regularly play a 6 hour set at night sometimes 6 or 7 days a week. This gave him an understanding of how to work a crowd, what music to play and when to drop the right track. The long sets also gave him a chance to play tracks from all the genres.
After developing his skills as a DJ abroad he returned to London to take things further by learning how to produce music and push forward his DJ career playing in clubs such as Ministry of Sound, seOne, Matter, Cable and Herbal, then on the radio. Not only has he been noticed for playing underground House and Techno but his eclectic sets have gained more and more attention, his Reggae, Electronic 80’s and Hip Hop podcasts have all been in high demand on the internet and he now performs sets of this kind on a monthly basis.
Performing with Dean Charles has also become a feature of his live sets, there is something about having a live singer accompanying a DJ that takes a performance to the next level. Especially when they are brothers, Dean’s soulful voice sits perfectly with Dan’s track selection and this can result in some great ad lib moments.
Early in 2013 Dan achieved his dream of launching his own record label Bite Your Bottom Lip Recordings (BYBL), the House label promotes handpicked artists known for their forward thinking approach to the scene. Ultimately, releasing music made to make people dance.
For this artist it’s all about making people move, pushing boundaries and playing music from the heart with its history in mind.
