Hailing from the fighting city of Philadelphia, Laylah “D-Fly” Waters first stepped behind the decks in 2001, making the natural progression from the dance floor to the DJ Booth. Initially influenced by and representing for such genres as Breaks and Trance, D-Fly then made the jump to Drum & Bass with the help of Mis-Ty and Armen on WKDU 91.7FM. That first mix tape would lead to exposure at Philly night spot Eden Roc at nights like Rotation and Tribalverb.
Cutting her teeth on the scene, D-Fly soon launched the weekly dubbed Precision Rhythm, adding to the proliferation of drum and bass in the City of Brotherly Love. After a successful run at Precision Rhythm, she would join the crew that would be known as Foundation, where they would put forth beats for all at club Dreemz. As the scene in Philly evolved, so did D-Fly. Her next contribution would be as a resident DJ for Tru Skool Productions, playing at spots like Medusa’s Lounge and the legendary God’s Basement, getting the chance to spin in places as far afield as Baltimore, Dallas and South Florida and internet radio shows like InTheLab on Phillydnb.com and Alchemy101 on drumnbasstv.com. D-Fly helped relaunch “Fusion” at Philadelphia’s Drum'n'Bass royalty venue Club Fluid alongside Armen, Clayton The Chemist, Prajna and Structure.
D-Fly’s latest forays have been into the NYC DNB scene where she’s put it down at such nights as Automatik, Konkrete Jungle Orgination, Funked Dub, Jungle Dub House, and Remedy DnB. She brings her multi-faceted knowledge of Jungle, Jump Up, Tech Step, Drumfunk and Atmospheric sounds of DNB as well as pushing the newer sounds of Liquid and Drumstep into this next decade.
